Holiday Destinations: The Titanic Historical Pictures

Tuesday marks the 102 nd anniversary of the world’s most famous maritime disaster– the sinking of the RMS Titanic 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912, in the North Atlantic Ocean after a collision with an iceberg. Among the 2,224 people aboard the British luxury liner on its maiden journey, 1,514 were killed. Titanic   received six warnings of sea ice on 14 April but she was traveling near her maximum speed when her squad sighted the iceberg. Unable to turn quickly enough, the ship suffered a glancing blow that buckled her   starboard   (right) side and opened five of her sixteen compartments   to the sea.   Titanic   had been designed to stay afloat with four of her forward compartments flooded but not more, and the crew soon realized that the ship would sink.
