Holiday Destinations: The Titanic Historical Pictures

Tuesday marks the 102nd anniversary of the world’s most famous maritime disaster– the sinking of the RMS Titanic 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912, in the North Atlantic Ocean after a collision with an iceberg. Among the 2,224 people aboard the British luxury liner on its maiden journey, 1,514 were killed.

Titanic received six warnings of sea ice on 14 April but she was traveling near her maximum speed when her squad sighted the iceberg. Unable to turn quickly enough, the ship suffered a glancing blow that buckled her starboard (right) side and opened five of her sixteen compartments to the sea. Titanic had been designed to stay afloat with four of her forward compartments flooded but not more, and the crew soon realized that the ship would sink.

This is a huge disaster in the history which always remains on our mind and we always remember this date in a calendar year.

The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,514 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. She was the largest ship afloat at the time of her maiden voyage. One of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, she was built between 1909 to 1911 by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. She carried 2,224 people.
